When the air fuel mix detonates before the sparkplug ignites the air fuel mix - it causes huge pressure-forces that can-will destroy the engine.

This is known as Det or Knock

a knock link detects this and chucks up a warning light - to let you know when to lift off and if there may be an underlying set up issue.

Some ECUs such as Simtek have this built in so no need for a knock link.
Most cars have some kind of knock detection built in
But some high performance cars like an impreza benefit from having a visual display on the dash to let you know exactly what is going on.

(high octane fuel doesnt provide more power...it has a higher burn rate and is there to help with the avoidance with det/knock...therefore in your 97 WRX - if you dont do so already - stick 100ron in it)

i was actually considering gettin a knock link... but i have a simtek ecu and i didnt know it had one built in, thats cool
