Default help overheating

still having problems with my less then a week old classic wagon as mentined im my other thread the car overheated and cut out, anyway the thermostat was kn***d so off it came started the car and in
its still overeheating, any way i noticed on top of my coolant filler tank a loose hose just dangling there? i dont recall seeing this before. is it an overflow? surely when hot the water would just **** out freely? so im thinkin it should be connected to something?? its been a while since i have owned a scoob and cannot remember what my others were like.
my less then helpful mechanics are adamant its a blown head?

but wouldnt the car smoke badly out of the exhuast? which it isnt? i@m hoping its this dangly hose as surley that could draw air in an cause it to overheat?

any reponse greatly appreaciated

Does the car have a ali header tank ?
Been here before myself, the head gasket can blow several ways and not always lead to smoking from the exhaust. So yes it is possible it has blown, taking a quick looks at your spark plugs might give you some indication if it has blown, or presure test each bore. Also the plastic head tanks are known to leak on the joint between the lower and upper part of the tank you should hear this when the car is turned off after it has been run up to full temp. If you have an ali head tank sometimes the over-flow pipe stops the cap from seating properly, take the cap off and run your finger along the inside of the filler neck. If you can feel the pipe sticking out abit then use a dremal to smooth if off.
Just some ideas for you to look at

You'll be looking at 700+ to repair it, but then you may aswell get a new cambelt and a major service whilst engine out, so ends up nearer 1000.

I decided to rebuild my engine instead.
