Default How restrictive standard airbox

What level bhp is this good to? Have Pipercross panelfilter but is this restrictive above 350bhp? Can this be improved in any way or is it a case of spending more dosh on a something like a large cone filter/induction? Have a MD321H turbo on a 2.5 conversion with wrx heads.
thanks
Trevor

I understand the panels can start to restrict airflow/power at around the 350bhp sort of level, yes.

Good practice would be to fit the largest cone (normally a K&N - due to their vast catalogue of styles/sizes) in the amount of suitable space available. The cost difference between a smaller cone and the largest one is relatively little (i.e. c.£30 min plays c.£70 max.), so makes sense to fit the biggest, then you'll know that it won't be a limiting factor for your mods now AND in the future! - i.e. a mod 'ticked off the list' that won't have to be revisited.

The large K&Ns - i.e. those which have a flow rate of around 650cfm - can easily achieve 500bhp and much more...

Trev,

I was forced to swap from a wing mount system back to a desnorkeled air box + JR filter some months ago and power dropped from 380 down to 355 bhp.
I put the drop in power down to increased restriction in the air box layout.
However, the likes of the Type 25 cars can get 400 hp out of the std air box but using a larger inlet pipe instead to remove some of the total induction flow restriction.

If Zen are still dealing with your car then it would pay to get a Hyperflow wing mount kit from Paul to try and reach the target - assuming its not the WRX heads that are holding you back.

Nick,
I understand the kit would be around £200, is it easy to fit and would the car map need a tweak?

Joz, thanks for the info mate

It would be about 1 hour altogether, but it would need a map tweak to work - again about 1 hours mapping.

DIY fit the wing intake plus an hour of Pauls time would be IRO £275.

I'm also moving over to a Hyperflow intake shortly so could fit yours at the same time if interested?

If you want to go with that option Trev I'll do the mapping FOC, as you've had numerous maps lately for one reason or other.
