Default Whats that box?

Just out of pure curiosity I was wondering if any of you guys know what that box of what seems like electronics is. Its on the underneath rear drivers side of the car when you look underneath the car behind the wheel? Bit of a vague question, and I should have picture buts a little dark outside.

It's a "tree-huggers special".... to save the trees from your cars evil petrol fumes.

Like trees don't burn well enough already ?

Emissions capturing crap. It's the carbon canister, holds vapour captured by the PCV system, alonside fumes from the fuel tank, until they can be sent into the inlet tract for burning.

AHH!! I had a look on the manual as well so curiosity has been satisfied. Thanks for the explanation, i can see what it does and how it works now. I never knew of such a system but it makes sence now.

Its required to meet emissions legislation, i think the only gains from removal would be a small weight saveing. Probably just easier to leave it on, im no expert mind you.

Oil vapour fumes lowers octante rating of the fuel, so if you were to remove it (and set up a catch-can system) - then get remapped - you could make some 'reasonable' bhp gains.

Even if you do the catch can without a remap, you will have still introduced some extra headroom against det - due to the octane rating being upped.

intriguing, so i guess even though the carbon filter is mainly designed to trap fuel vapours from the fuel tank and the crankcase it does not trap oil from the crank case? Joz have you got any rough figures of the expected gains from having a catch can?

I think the charcoal in the cannister traps fuel vapours... BUT... the oil vapours from both heads/crankcase are still recirc'd to the intake system, via the connections on the turbo hose (I assume the oil vapours don't go through the charcoal cannister as well, beforehand???).

Theoretically you can run without a catch-can and just leave the 3 oil beather pipes to VTA, but it's not a very sociably responsible/green thing to do, and will surely fail the MOT(?)

I wouldn't know how much worth there is in doing it to gain bhp (if a remap was done after). Probably negligible(?). Don't know I'm afraid.
