Priming Oil Cooler/Lines after Installation
Will be fitting a oil cooler tomorrow, does anyone have any advice on how to prime the oil cooler and lines when its first installed (I don’t want it pumping air into the engine when I start the car ).
Cheers

I just used a funnel to fill the cooler.... the flow rate of an oil pump is huge, in the time it takes for Defi's do do their "intro" mine went atraight up to 4 bar (hot idle).#

P.S. Mine's a TMOC, so I could also fill the pipes before starting....

I was thinking this exact thing the other day when looking for tmoc.
I was concerned that after an oil change, the delay to fill the radiator could cause a oil shortage.
I take it there is a hole to fill the tmoc / shake it to get the air bubbles out?
How much extra capacity do you get with the tmoc, and where u get it from. Found one from us for 500 bucks so about 300 quids. Seems reasonable. Just concerned about any effect on the engine.
How does it affect cooling when the engine is cold, take longer to warm up or does it have cleaverness to only use the rad when is required?
Cheers

Cheers Dunx, thought as much, I'll prime cooler and lines at highest point and give them plenty of time for the oil to work its way down.
Chris,
I'm running a oil cooler as temps have jumped quite a bit since I carried out my last round of mods (cars running apporx 410bhp/350ft lbs and is seeing temps up aorund the 110oC mark when driven hard) its also running quite a bit warmer when I'm just cruising aorund. Am having a new engine fitted and expect to see a further increase in temp with the extra power. It would be guess but I think most oil coolers require an extra 1-2 litres of oil over factory (I'll have a better idea tomorrow ). It depends on the size of the core I guess.

Any cooler can be fitted as a TM, ( assuming you have a FMIC ) you just need to fab some brackets and order hoses long enough, mine replaces the modine oil/water heat exchanger, so it takes around 1/2 a mile further to reach 70 degrees oil temp., around 3.5 miles.
You should spec a kit with a thermostat, as cold oil is not as good as warm oil for the engine. Mine needed an extra litre of CFS in the rad ( quite large ! ) and a smidge more to fill the pipework.
Last change I just twisted the key and the gauge read 4 bar almost instantly.

P.S. 75 mph on the motorway used to see 98 degrees, now 78 degrees as the 'stat opens at 78 and the cooler does it's thing.
Haven't done any high speed runs on Elvington yet....
