The smaller the turbo, the more often you'll run into compressor surge on lift offs, compressor surge hammers the thrust bearings and can lead to premature failure (If using a Garret, everyone says you MUST use a 360 thrust if running into surge) that said the TD's seem fairly robust, the IHI VF's aless so though (not sure what you have) when I blanked mine I couldn't drive it without running into surge, but then I have 0.8bar of boost by 1800rpm.

i have a vf24.
and running standard 1.1bar of boost..
just love the sound of the filter flutter...
so still dont know as a new turbo aint cheap,......
or i could just get it built to hybrid spec,ie:360 bearings and all the rest....
how willi know if it hits a stall, will it just shut down?????
cheers chris

I would only run no dump valve on a good condition TD series mate, pretty sure most of the bearing VF series wont last long.

In all honesty it's not worth it unless FMIC/induction, could hardly hear it on my TMIC/Panel before FMIC route.

You could always record some WRC engine clips onto a CD and play them on your car stereo. All the noise you want and no risk to your turbo (or your relationship).

As mentioned TD series allegedly tough enough to go DVless.

VF's up to VF29 = need DV
VF30 > on = DVless okay

Courtesy of JGM's wisdom.

My VF35 performs a lot better without the DV, especially on fast full bore up changes, chatter not that loud either..

My VF35 is heavily ported/throat-ed, so maybe that's why it doesn't surge, still noisy though (whistles) if I just plant my foot off boost. Can't complain at 1bar by 2700rpm and 1.6bar from 3000-6000rpm (1.3-7k)..
