Default defi's

hi all ive got a set off defi gages in my99.
was all working fine till the oil temp started playing up.
it wouldnt do the start up set up and the was just stinking at about 130.
i took the sener out and put in a boiling cup of water and it worked fine but when it went back in it stopped again.
any ideas

If you remove the sensor and hang it in mid-air does it do the same, then it's an earthing fault... or a duff connection in the wiring.

yeah it works fine when i take it out.
all the others work fine though

Check the earthing of the engine to the chassis.... grasping at straws now !

if you have the original defi pod for the classic ill buy them!

If the sensor works fine out of the car, then that would tell me that when you have a bad earth, when connected to the hole above cylinder 3. Thats if you are doing that way and not using a sandwich adapter.

Maybe you are using too much PTFE tape, and its not earthing properly.

Wiring problem by the sound of it - the link wires between the gauges have been known to break/terminals pull out.

As suggested by Mick above but i would also check the wiring from Sensor to control unit as i have found issues with these too.

Check around the connections on the control unit too and ensure the copper is not touching each other.
