Default Learning to re-map

One for the mappers this one really, i work with computers and wouldnt mind branching off a bit and learning to be able to map ECU's.

Clearly i am going to need a laptop but just wondering what would be required aswell as that? Is there any training i can undertake? Any info appreciated of course

Thanks
Jon

It can be done, put be prepared to put in a whole lot of reading (books and online) and a whole lot of time learning if you want to do it safely. You'll also need to get a Wideband O2 (something like an Innovate LC-1 should be fine). An EGT sensor is also useful. You WILL need detcans. You will also need some software (RomRaider or ecuEdit would be my recommendations). You will need a cable to connect into the ODB2 port. Also download and learn to use the Learning View tool. It's a lot more expensive than a remap or two, but good fun to learn.

I'm going down the same road. Have had great results and service from pro-mappers in the past. However, if I paid someone £500 to overclock my PC everytime I changed a component I'd be broke ...and stupid. If I'm going to continually tinker with the engines on my cars it makes far more sense learning to edit ECUs to keep the engines healthy.

Getting the tactrix OpenPort 2.0 cable, det cans, wide band sensor and have been boning up on ignition timing and fuel systems. Lots of useful info out on google and scoobypedia. Trying romraider software and will start with some basics like data logging and learning to re-flash my ECU for when I screw it up! Number of times that backing up the BIOS on motherboards and graphics cards saved them....

I've also seen some software recently that lets you view and copy ''locked'' Ecutek maps.

wide band o2 best place maybe ebay, detcans either buy a knock block or make you own, (google detcans) then it all depends on what you intend to have a go at mapping, and what car you have (if you wanted to have a go on that) other than that, open source would be your easiest to start from and has a good following on other forums.

I have experimented on my 03 wrx using romraider and ecuflash, just recommennd you spend a few months looking at other maps and trying to understand what has been changed, romraider logs and learning view tool are good to see how you are going with your map

I dont really want to say. Its a long story. Basically I got my local garage (does rally prep etc) to do the timing belt on my old mapped classic, he took it a run, sh@t himself, asked what had been done and I told him about the Ecutek remap and who done it.
He applied to Ecutek for the software and got turned down and the last time I spoke to him, he had aquired this software saying it would take years for him to be in the same league as said mapper so this would enable him to have a ''peek'' at the Ecutek map, copy it and install it as an open map? I think?

do a search for malibujack for ecu unlocker

1st step i would say is learn what your looking at and why you would need to change it, the basics, once you fully understand that then the rest will come with practice!
