V5 STI JPN - Can I ECUTEK or not?
I have what is registered as a 1998 STI Type V.
I am getting a little confused as to to whether my ECU is able to be mapped or if I have to go down the HKS Fcon / Apexi PFC route..
I though 1999 cars on could be mapped but then I remember reading somewhere the JPN V5 could be?
Can any ECU experts help?

Don't forget that the model year of the car (which is important as far as technical specs are concerned) and the year of first registration are not always the same.
Subaru, like most other manufacturers, switches model years at their factory around September-October - so 1999MY cars, for example, began to be manufactured around September 1998 and became available to dealers shortly afterwards. Therefore it's perfectly possible for a 99MY car - like the STi5, to be registered in late '98.
As above, the STi5 is a 99MY car, so yes, if you're sure you have a 5 (rather than a late V4), the ECU can be reprogrammed.

That is great news guys.
Thanks for the prompt replies. It is according the all the documentation a V5. So I have a 99MY car that happened to be registered in late 98.
Now to find an ECUTEK mapper in Northern Japan!!

To be certain you do indeed have an late-1998 MY99 v.5 (rather than a late-98 MY98 v.4), then check your VIN plate's Applied Model code... It should read "GC8F...", in which case, yes, it's a v.5 (V) and the OEM ECU is mappaple via ECUTek sofware.
If, however, it reads "GC8E..." then it's a MY98 v.4 (IV) and you'd need an aftermarket ECU such as Apexi PFC, Simtek, etc...

Feeling good.. I hear the Ecutek is about as good as most aftermarket ECUs and should be a lot cheaper right?

Yep that's the correct code for the regular STi Version V 4-door saloon.
OEM ECU is excellent - has ign. timing adv/retard for example, which is all retained when mapped via ECUTek i.e. the ECU functions in exactly the same way as stock - but the remap on it will now be safe.
