I would check the oil pressure gauge first jon to eliminate the gauge or sender unit being faulty before you look at other possibility's.
If the oil pressure is lower than it normally is when driving, its possible that the relief
valve in the oil pump is sticking open or the backing plate screws on the pump are coming loose.
Mick.

30 psi is about 2.5 bar so at 1700 rpm i wouldnt say this is low low at idle mines 2 bar which is about 1000 rpm
what is the pressure at 70 mph at 4000 rpm say ?
or at cold idle 1st thing in the morning ?

ah,if its dropping to 0 then there is a problem
At idle when hot readin ?
at idle when cold readin ?
does it increase when you rev it at idle ?
but if it is reading 0 at times, does sound terminal if the meter is accurate, from my experience they usually are if no leaks etc,its nice to think the dial/meter is faulty but generally they are pretty reliable

yeah when hot @ idle but if blip the throttle it goes back up to 20psi but can watch it hover where it will dip then rise with no revs ?

hi mate,i have been so paranoid lately about my oil pressure as i fitted the usual gauges, oil temp, water temp and oil pressure.on cold start all ok but when it got hot the oil pressure reads about 14/15 psi.went to scooby clinic todayto ask advice and the owner told me to take out the gauges and stop worrying as his scoob only reads 15 psi on defi gauges using 10/50 oil wheras i am using 15/40.he says that as soon as people put in gauges they frighten them selves with the oil pressure.not saying there is nothing wrong with yours but hope this info helps, cheers tony

Makes sense i guess at least i will get to do a rebuild on the engine to forge it for a couple of grand instead of a few hundred to replace the timing belt and pumps ? I know what you mean about them making you a bit paranoid but i would rather have them then not

Gauges, sensors, etc. are good... so long as you have the discipline to act and stop driving, or come off boost etc. (depending on the problem).
The juxtaposition, though, is that human nature tends to behave along the lines of: "Awww f**k, I don't want to believe the bad news the gauge is telling me, so I'll turn a blind eye......"
Monitoring in order of priority (for me at least) would be:-
1) Knock level/alarm trigger (with possibly AFR supplementary gauge)
2) Boost gauge
3) Oil pressure
4) Oil temp
