Knocking noise
Could be anything, ask your mate to make a vid of the noise. Someone may be able to help.
Although you have not said what year the car is, it could be a faulty timing bearing or even a dodgy tensioner. Excessive tolerances due to wear and tear on bearings or crank(have known the crank to slide back and forth 4mm due to this), could be the rod bearings. TBH the list goes on. Make a vid fella and fire into your photobucket and paste the link in the thread. Godluck

If its the crank then it will have to be changed as grinding these is not reccommended. If its the bearings then these will have to be replaced and if theres any light scouring on the rod journals on the crank then it may have to be polished.. Note engine will have to come out to do this. And it ain;t cheap.
Ideally you need someone to make an accurate diagnosis and then take things from there, so get cracking with the vid
