Default Petrol Smell

Hi all. I opened the boot on my car and got a strong smell of petrol. I am not sure where it could be coming from as i thought the petrol tank is located under back seat area? Could it be coming from the fuel pump? Also i am not sure if there is a smell inside the car as i have smellies in there.

Any help would be great. Oh car is a v4 impreza.

Thanks.

Paul

If you have had a fuel pump change, the rubber seal on the fuel pump mount may not be sitting right. I had this on mine so got a new seal and plastered it with sealent aswell.

Thank you for the replies. I emptied boot and removed the carpet only to see a wet patch. Looks like owner before must of had a petrol can and it leaked. Wet patch is located at the rear of the car near the lights. Thank you again.

How long have you had the car? As petrol would evaporate reasonably quickly even without our recent heat wave.

Had the car about 5 weeks now. It is a stale type smell and the patch is a dark colour like oil but not so much the smell of oil. I can't see where it has leaked from unless it came from a container. The patch is on it's own away from all possible leak places.

Previous owner as put a new boot carpet in, but it looks like it as soaked the remains up and smells. I am going to strip the boot and get it steam cleaned and go from there.

I have only just started to get the smell but looks like stain been there for a while. May get in touch with previous owner and see what happened.
