To me it seems a bit odd for you to have an ej20 6 in your wrx. I thought that code was for the subaru legacy!?! (Not that i've seen any early engine plates!) However in saying that this could explain why you cant find the last 3 digits as those are for production variations so if they used a different fuel system than the norm, for instance, making the engine code have a 6 it could be the product variation giving you the last 3 digits of 5PJ.

Or at some point someone has changed the plate!?!

I'd ring subaru main dealer parts dept. and give them the numbers and see if they recognise them.

I think the OP has misread it. It should be a G as in EJ20G - that's the code for the MY93-96 v.1/2 engine. Obviously a "G" can look like a "6" if glanced at quickly, etc...

Although that still doesn't answer the semantics of his question about the last 3 digits.

Dont' worry mate.

That is the correct engine for your RA i.e. a EJ20G pre-MY97 WRX one (the other characters do mean things, like trim level etc.)

The only other engine it could be would be a v.2 STi engine - which is better!

If desperate for an answer, contact Pat Herborn (his SN ID is just pat) - he's very clued up on Subaru engine codes and what it all means...

It's the "EJ20G..." part of the code indicates that it's a MY93-96 engine.

Your Applied Model code of GC8C4DD indicates that the car is indeed a WRX Type RA STi Version II (sorry for not checking that out earlier)... And is corroborated by the correct transmission code that you posted.

So I have no reason to believe that you have the lesser non-STi spec engine - bound to be the correct STi one.

I know that this is no guarantee as such... but is that engine code you quoted the same as printed on the rectangular sticker on the driver side black timing chest cover (front of motor) too?
