locking up under braking
i had to do an emergency stop the other day from about 40mph to avoid
some d**k who didn't even look before pulling out
its the first time i have done this and expected the abs to kick in,
but i just locked the wheels, cue loads of screeching and much smoke
and a quick to the guy who nearly made me crash into him.
on my company transit van when the abs kicked in it was like a little man
under the brake pedal doing over head presses with it, the pedal literally pumped up and down. on the scooby nothing though like i said just noise and smoke.
is the scooby abs crap? is my driving crap, what is goin on?
where is my abs light? i have never seen it, i'm assuming if the fuse
has gone then the abs light would light up? unless the bulb has also gone?
any advice?
oh its a 96 wrx, standard except exhaust (so far)

Does an ABS light come on when you turn the ignition on? should stay on for a few seconds then go out... if not you probably dont have ABS as it wasnt always fitted to early cars.

i dont know, thought abs was on all wrx's?
i thought it was only type r/ra's that didn't have it or was an option on.
anyone else know if it was an option or not?
i have never seen an abs light ever so i must not have it,
i'm sure the abs fuses are there tho? or would that not matter

How long have you had your car, and have you looked under the bonnet yet? Seems a bit odd for a performance car owner not to know something this fundamental about the way the car's put together. If in doubt, the ABS pump on GC's is fitted in between the filter box and the right-hand headlight. Have a peak and see if there is one, and go from there.

As said, it was a factory-spec'd option on JDM MY93-96 WRXs.
Easy way to find out is to pop the lid... Under the bonnet on the driver side at the front near the wing (in front of the big, black plastic airbox) will be either pretty much an empty space (aside from an upright, cylindrical, black cannister)... Or... they'll be a green-bronze coloured metal box thing with four hard, shaped, narrow metal pipes (like the hard brake pipes) coming out of it.
If the latter, then your car is fitted with the ABS system.... Which, seemingly, doesn't work!
