Has anyone fitted STi engine to bugeye WRX
As you can see from my other thread, I have managed to kill the engine in my 2002 bugeye WRX (UK spec)
I can source a low mileage used bugeye STi engine but getting mixed info as to whether it is a straightforward swap.
I have a VF35 and STi pinks to fit anyway, my top mount I/C is larger than the standard STi one.
I would have to use my flywheel and clutch to mate up with my 5 speed box.
Can someone who has actually done this give me a straight answer please before I spend a chunk of money ?

It depends on the state of your heads, if you block the oil feeds to the AVCS on the STI block, and fit your heads, then it should be easy.
Problems start with the engine loom that controls the AVCS, plus the ecu....
IMHO

P.S. I think the six speed clutch/flywheel fits, but you need to check clearance in the bell-housing, and maybe fettle to suit.

I have seen a thread somewhere on one of the US forums about running with the AVCS disabled, apparantly has some effect on low end response ?
Simon says not worth the hassle of getting the STi lump into the car, tomorrow I will be getting some prices together for a used WRX engine and deciding which way to proceed.

I read on another forum that the sti lump and ecu can be used but you need to add a few wires into the wrx loom to connect the avcs. Depends on how good the price is on the sti lump and how good you are with electrics, as if you have to pay someone else to do it could be expensive, The sti clutch and flywheel can be used, but the bell housing needs modifying to get clearance, there is a post somewhere showing the amount of cutting required, you may need a six speed starter motor as well though.

In a complete U-turn worthy of a politician, I have (hopefully !) sourced a std spec recon WRX engine.
I have a VF35, STi pinks, uprated fuel pump, iridium plugs and 3 port solenoid to go on when the engine is fitted and hopefully Simon can do the honours and map it so that I can run it in !

if you are able to get the complete sti motor n loom i would suggest wiring it up definitely worth rather than combining parts. it may be expensive now but worth it in the long run

Just a standard recon WRX engine, I will post more details when it has arrived and i have checked it over.
I was very tempted by the 2.1 forged build for £2450 including a CDB, the only problem was that I would have the labour cost to remove my engine, swap the heads etc and then the cost of putting it all back together (even the cost of head gaskets etc start to mount up)
If the recon engine proves to be 'too good to be true', I may still look at this option.
The people due to fit the engine have p***ed me off somewhat though.
This mornings phone call went along the lines of 'oh, it's a recon engine we're swapping ? it will be more than we originally quoted, we thought that you were getting a second hand engine ?'
Even if it had been a second hand engine, not many people sell them with all the ancillaries attached (turbo, alternator etc) !
To save a few quid, I fitted the uprated fuel pump myself today, every little helps !
