Default Turbo Seals?? White Smoke

Hi all,

Scouted the forum and couldn't see an exact description of my problem so here goes...

Impreza MY98 UK Spec
Full Decat
Apexi Mapped
Original TD04

On startup the car is fine, drives nicely and pulls well but once the car is warmed up and left to idle for approx 1-2mins I start to see white smoke from the exhaust. Initially it is quite fine, but after a while it begins to thicken.

The smoke will stop when driving but re-appears again once the car is idle.

I first noticed this when queueing at a drive through.

I have checked the oil and water levels and they dont seem to be dropping (although both to me appear a little too full). I have also checked for mayonnaise on the dipstick and oil cap and nothing there.

Could this be a turbo seal?

I am no mechanic, but I can be handy with instructions available but to be honest I don't know where to start with this one!!

If anyone has any ideas that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Simon.

Either valves/guides, etc. or turbo oil seals or its thrust bearing on the way out...

White can be for very hot oil too (but is invariably tinged blue to some degree).

Plumes of water vapour looks different to plumes of white oil vapour.

White smoke = coolant
Grey smoke = burnt but not combusted oil (turbo seal on exhaust side, for example)
Blue smoke = combusted oil
Red smoke = Flare gone off
