Default Gaskets or new motor?

So with my head gaskets blowing out the other day i have been thinking a lot. The gasket repair will cost me about £1200, a EJ257 short block swap will cost me about £3200.

The bank manager said i should just fix my v2 STI for cheap then sell her and get a newer STI. I really love this car am thinking to put the new motor in and keep her a few years and then sell for a newer Scooby. How much does a new motor increase the value?

Any opinion or advice would be great.

What does the £3200 cover? Bigger injectors, turbo, ecu etc.
Unfortunatelly, it will never add £3200 to the cars value.

get the gaskets done and have the bottom end checked while the engines out if the water has mixed with the oil might have damaged the bearings and £3k+ for another engine why not spend the money on doing up the one youve got at least then you will know whats been done and will save you a bit of money for mods etc.

Both these prices are drive in drive out, drop the car off give it a week or so and drive it home. The head job is loads cheaper than my local dealer who wants 17 hours to do.

As for the motor change, this is a load of work. Engine out, all ancillaries off old and onto new, new water pump a few hoses, gaskets, oils and fluids, will need a new ECU, the heads still have to be skimmed etc. The short block alone is £1575 and honestly i dont think £1500 labour for such a job is too much.

I hear what you are saying. The thing i like most about replacing the motor is its a brand new short block, crank, main bearings, rods, rod bearings, pistons, rings. In its stock form, this block is capable of reliably supporting up to 400 BHP. Thats more than i will need for a long time. Also the original motor is 13 years old, cant expect it to run forever.

Please keep the options coming guys, all taken on board.
