Default Erm... Knocking from Engine!

Howdo peeps!

Slightly concerned!!

My 97 P UKT has started to rattle/knock slightly after its warmed up and tick over drops realy low when i pull up to lights.

I know some classic scoobs suffer from piston slap when started from cold, mine does but its not to bad in fairness.

Now this is the 1st Impreza ive owned so im not sure if im worrying about nothing.

Its due a service in the next 800 miles or so, ive checked oil, water, gearbox fluids and they are all good. (in fairness it dont seem to use anything)

The check engine light also comes on from time to time, but what i do it put the clutch down, its goes low on tick over but the warning light goes off......confused! Any ideas??

Any info would be great

Cheers

Lee

Plus this is only a slight knock, will this cause any problems while driving the car?

i.e loss of power, boost, any probs i should keep an eye out for??

And if it the big end, is it saveable before it goes?

Sorry for all the questions

The big end bearing will need to be replaced, which means the whole engine will need to be taken appart...

The longer you leave it, the more damage will happen...

Just think, a piston is only supposed to go up and down, but with a broken bearing, it may be trying to go up and down at all sorts of different angled.

It doesnt really matter how many miles the car has on, its all about how the engine is treated... trashed when the oil hasnt warmed up properly... over heating... loads of things can cause it to go.

Your best to get it checked out by a Scooby mechanic before it gets worse, then it will cost even more!

Im not sure on what costs are on an engine rebuild though

if it is that you be cheaper buying a decent second hand engine than rebuilding it lets be honest there ten a penny out there!

Woah....Might not be the big ends yet, could be something much less sinister: e.g. some people have found that the turbo heatshield gets loose and starts to make a rattling sound at certain RPM.

You need to get to a specialist who knows what they're doing and won't just assume the worst and sting you for a build you might not need. Suggest you speak to someone like David at APi as a matter of urgency mate.

CEL lights should always be investigated. Keep the car off boost until this is sorted.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worse

You need to know the difference between a knock from the inside of an engine to a rattle on the outside. Completely different sound! If your not sure get a good mechanic to have a listen, not a cowboy who's gonna sting ya lots a $$$$ for something fake which in fact only took 10 minutes to fix and 10 days sitting at the bottom of his workshop collecting dust!!
