Default Gearbox oil topup

I noticed the other day that my gearbox oil level was a little low - do I have to find out exactly what type is already in there (was done at recent service) or can I put in something like castrol syntrax 75-w 90 without any problems ?

any advice appreciated.

what do you mean by low it should be just above the l line when cold and at the f when warm if its below the l line then it needs topped up

I though the hot / cold thing was for automatic transmission - hence the specific hot and cold levels on the dipstick.

anyway mine is just below the minimum level when cold (manual transmission) so ideally would like to top it up to over the minimum mark.

cheers - will pop round to halfords tomorrow as i`m sure they sell it in 1 litre bottles.

The oil is semi-synthetic so should be ok to use with whatever is in just now.

I fell into the trap of not pushing the dipstick fully home, topping up, then realising it was overful and draining the excess out!

Make sure the dipstick is pushed FULLY home.
