Default Just bought a scooby!!

Hi guys,

I am proud to now be a scooby owner having waited a year to buy one!
The only one i could get insured on is an impreza turbo 2000!
The car is fantastic though and I couldnt be happier!
I just thought I'd ask if any one has any tips for me being a scooby owner for the first time??
Anything from engine to fuel consumption to bodywork to mods, anything!

Thanks guys!

hello and welcome,

no tips on fuel consumption im afraid other than makesure you have plenty pennies. personally i never let the tank get anyless than quater full just saves you sucking up any bits of sh**e from the bottom of the tank.

not sure what else you want to know mate, if its extra power your after then a full decat exhaust and a remap is the best place to start..

LOL!
Yeah im well prepared for all my money going down on the car

Yeah its got the PPP which includes the remap but I was wondering if i stick a bigger turbo in (td05, vf28 ihi etc) then how does that affect the remapped ecu, would I need to get another rempa done or would it still run quite fine and to potential?

Its also got the backbox (nothign special) but seeing as ive got no money now i'll wait a couple of months and then drop it first around 40 mm, then stick a p1 splitter up front, then performance all the way!!

What you reckon?

Thanks for the input guys!

you would definatly need a remap if you were to upgrade the turbo. your PPP is setup using the origional turbo therefor changing it would (i think) require a map to correct the fuel/air mixture to make sure its running right.

dont quote me on this but you may require bigger injectors/fuel pump and tmic depending on what turbo you go for. i know this is required or should i say reccomended on the newage impreza but im not 100% when it comes to the classics

Check condition of all boost/vac lines/hoses and replace as appropriate. Check condition of HT leads and coilpack and replace as appropriate.

Advisable to get a decat downpipe, Walbro 255 fuel pump, fresh fuel and air filters. Check spark plugs and if knack'd replace with NGK PFR7B gapped to 0.65-0.7mm.

Depending on how deep your pockets go, I'd suggest sticking on a VF35 turbo as direct fit replacement - good for 320-340 should you want it later (with a FMIC). This turbo still offers lively spool and won't ruin (too much) the low-down response that you're currently enjoying on the tiny TD04L.

Then get a remap and you should get near 320bhp with the VF35 / 440cc / MY99/00 TMIC combo...

LOL
Great advice guys! When my pockets go deeper then I will do so. How many miles should I get for £20 petrol considering petrol's 106.9?? Also, does putting vpower in make a difference? LOL my car is a MY99 uk spec turbo 2000 with ppp!
Thanks

£20! well anything from 50miles to maybe 100 if you drive like my mum. As you have a MY99 then you will have 440's on as standard so they should be good for 330-340bhp. As for the turbo a vf34/35 would fit the bill and uprate your fuel pump then job done, for now! Do remember to set aside some money (yes more money) for a replacement clutch at some point if you still have the original one fitted. Then there is the suspension......££

V-power is the best fuel in my opinion closely followed by Tesco 99. To get the full advantage of either of these you would need to have your car mapped on it. When the time comes and you have all the above sorted fill up with either before you have it mapped. Just remember that you are then limited to either of these so make sure you can get plenty in your area.

£20 at 106.9p = 18.7ltrs. Going easy, you should get about 90 miles. Constant hooning, then half that!

Get the idea? ...

I was told that with my 99 T2000 I should fit vf34, FMIC, fuel pump, upgrade the injectors and remap for 350BHP. Do you think the standard 440's will be good enough for 350?? Be nice to save some pennies somewhere

If you're hell bent on "I must have 350bhp, nothing less will do", then I'd be inclined to move to 550s, befor the remap....

Well, if I could get 350 on the 440's then I would, however, as I've been to hell, seen the devil and got the bug.. why not

Agree with Joz on this one 440's would be maxed out at that level for sure. If I wanted 350 then 550's would be my choice without a doubt. Not the best way of saving pennies, settling for 330ish may be a better bet

not 100% you would need a fmic.. the STi TMIC is good for upto 350bhp, probably cheaper to get one of them rather than a FMIC

This is what I mean - some motors will make 350bhp on 440s... but I'm sure others won't.

And as mentioned by Skooby53, even if 440s do make you 350bhp, they'll be near-maxed - not good.

Agree.

You can just picture the scene... Car gets mapped and mapper says, "...it would've easily done 350+ if you'd have fitted 550s..."

Welcome to the world of Subarus my friend, be prepared to never be happy...... you will always want more

Defo get 550's anything less is a complete waste of time if you want 350bhp, a VF35 is a superb turbo, good spool times and good power delivery.

Defo do the fuel pump

the exhaust should be fine as it unless you really don't mind changing it every year for the MOT.

Save money, don't buy a FMIC, at the power you want just buy a second hand STI7 or 8 TMIC and plonk that on, they are good for well over 350bhp

Buy all the bits and store them, fit them all at the same time and then get the map done (don't drive the car inbetween or you will break it)

On the fuel Front, if your car is mapped for Tesco 99 you will be able to run V-power with no adverse effects and vice Versa!

Great advice guys! Thanks a lot
Yeah I do drive the car sensibly but then give it some every now and then but no constant hooning! Right now i'm broke as a beggar so got to save up!
I put £20 petrol in (tesco 99) and it gave me 85 miles driving sensibly!
I was told its best to get my car dyno'd to see what the air/fuel ratio is and then I'd be able to tell if the car's fuelling
A few of my mates got these babies, an sti and a uk spec and they both were getting about 300 miles from a full tank (£60 - £70)
does having that prodrive backbox affect the fuel consumption? or is it the whole remap in general? Would anyone know what petrol the prodrive ecu is good for?
Thanks guys!

Prodrive recommend 97 iirc for their PPP on classics.

i think the only fuel that most people avoid is BP ultimate as it doesn't seem to agree with imprezas.

IIRC = if I recall correctly

Not sure whether an unmapped pump will actually increase consumption as such. A new pump - especially an uprated, high-flow Walbro 255 - will just give healthy fuel pressure to the FPR and at the injector heads.

If you fit a pump in conjunction with a remap, if anything the fuel cons. will prob. be a tad better in closed loop conditions, as the mapper may optimise (lean out for economy) the off boost/low rpm AFR tables (compared to the OEM map).
