MY99 Turbo; Replace or Upgrade
While at the Nurburgring this weekend, something went wrong with the turbo on my standard 101k MY98 UK Turbo 2000 wagon.
About half way round on my 2nd lap, i lost all boost. I backed off, but when i queuing up for the paddock (it was VERY busy) there was smoke coming from turbo area, but i couldn't locate where it was actually coming from. It was still revving very freely with no boost at all.
When I got back to the hotel later that day, my friends had a quick look and noticed that the actuator was stuck (closed maybe?) which they explained was releasing all the boost out of the exhaust and not back in through the car.
To get me going for a bit longer, they removed the actuator, blocked off a little pipe and attached metal jubille clip on the actuator valve on the turbo to the oil feed open it up fully. They told me not to rev more than 5k as it would overboost. Bit of a bodge and I didnt really know what they were doing, but it got me another hugely fast lap in and even got me home.
On the way back (last night/this morning) the car was smooth and had alot of boost, but I think the turbine might be loose or the bearings worn as it was making some sqeely noise when coming off boost and was hesitating badly at around 4.5k.
I am now looking to replace the turbo as I think its probably on its last legs now. Ideally I would like to upgrade to something a little bigger, but i'm on quite a tight budget so bolt on option is what I'm after.
The only modication so far is a mild steel decat pipe. I've done a search but can only come up with solutions to reach big power. I'm not looking to make big power, just want a reliable car with a tad more power.
Any ideas?

td05-18g and a remap?

Anything else bigger and you'll need supporting mods I'd have thought. Which means more money.

I am preferably looking for a second hand turbo which will just bolt on with no other modifications.
Is there compatability between my Turbo 2000 and other classix models like WRX/STI turbos? For example could i buy this to fit on my car?
Sorry if thats a dumb question, but i'm pretty new to Subaru's and turbos!

no matter what turbo you put back on it will need a map, unless you go for the bog TD04
i have heard nothing but bad things about the VF23 you will get more boost and power from a td05
if you talk to JGM im sure he could get a TD04 to 280bhp with supporting mods
im not sure what the 23 in capable of
darc

Hybrid TD04 ? Retains fast spool characteristics.
I believe Andy Forrest does them on an exchange basis.
Still needs a remap; but runs well on my 99 wagon
(which I'm missing, after upgrading to an STI).

Thanks you all for your help on this matter.
What would realistically be the conseqences of running for example a VF23 without a remap. I can see you all suggest remapping, but that works out minimum £500! The cars only worth £1500!!
I drive the car normal 90% of the time, and to be honest, i am just looking for a cheap replacement for my broken turbo. This car is my daily car and I have other projects on to go and not really to spend more than £200 on the replacement.

I used my hybrid TD04 with an off the shelf Ecutek 1.18 bar map for a few months; but didn't really push it until it was done properly. It still went well.
You see them occasionally on ebay, probably on sn too.
Depends on how long you intend to keep the car, which in my case is over 10 years from new (and still wondering what to do with it, now there's a 54 blob to drive in the household too).
