Default is it the turbo

hi folks,
hopefully some one can help, ive got a 94 wrx which has just thrown loads of oil out of the dump valve, oil has also made its way up towards the air box. the car was running fine but now it has no boost at all and it wont idle, no smoke is coming out the exhaust. would it just be the turbo at fault or am i looking at a new engine aswell.
thanks ron

Really does sound like your turbo has failed on the compressor 'cold' intake side. Therefore prob the oil seal on that side has failed, rather than the thrust bearing or exhaust side oil seals.

Sorry, bud.

Does sound to me that turbos u/s. The other thing it could be is you've got knackard rings causing high crankcase pressure which is pushing oil up the breather pipe into airbox and down to turbo!! Like I said tho more likely the turbo! Pop off the air inlet pipe into turbo and give the impeller a wiggle if there is lots of play then yes to turbo.

Yeah. turbo failure almost always loses all boost very quickly after the failure happened. Charged air escapes through it, and/or the shaft/wheels are well knackered.

I had at least 3 turbo failures on my old R5 turbo (and I think one on my 'Grale Evo too), so speak from some semblance of experience.

Pull off the IC feed pipe from the comp nozzle - is it properly wet inside with oil (rather than the normal thin film residue)?...

yeah mate it was proper wet with loads of oil in the intercooler, when you start there is no smoke from the back but i did notice a bit of smoke coming out the oil filler cap when you take it off

Yeah, I'm 95% certain it's turbo gone. Do you have a performance car, or indeed an Impreza, specialist near you for you to quickly get them to confirm our suspicions?

Before doing anything, get a compression test done, if it is a bottom end problem it will show straight away.

Interesting.

Fair play to WMS for thinking this - it sounded odds on it was a turbo to me.

Sorry to hear this though mate -- will you be seizing the opp to get it upgraded internally?

What you must do is have 3 bank accounts:-

1) One in both names -- you both pay in EXACTLY half of all household bills/rent (or mortgage).
2) One in the bitch's name -- for the rest of her disposable income.
3) Ditto as per 2) -- but for yourself instead.

That way, then when you dip into your own acc for car repairs etc, then she should have no cause for argument (unless you start begging the bitch for her cash before the month's out) lol

DISCLAIMER: "the bitch" is employed for comedy purposes only

These tests will also identify issues with heads. So not always the block but could be problems with cylinder heads.

ALthough looking at the age of your car it will more than likely be the bottom end.
