When you do get her started does the engine idle high then drop down to normal idle when warm? If so the IACV is working. I think you'll find if it is not then the engine will run or try to but will be idling really low when cold may seem juddery.

To check tappet clearances you need to remove the rocker covers, find out the tappet clearances, get yourself sum feeler gauges and check the gaps when cold. If they are tight, to the point you cant get the gauges in between the cam and follower (tappet bucket) then the inlet and/or exhaust valves are being pushed open giving you no compression. The tappet shims need replacing to give you the correct gap.

Yer not an easy job to replace if needed!! I've not had to do it on a scooby (which looks a complete *** to do!) but on sum you can get a tool to get the tappet shim out. On others you have to remove the cam shaft which means removing cam belt, cam gears and cam carrier caps. Pricey if you cant do it yourself!! Cant imagine the shims would be expensive or you could get your original shims ground to the correct size at a machine shop.
