CAMS ARE STIFF
Hi guys,
on the last step of re-building my engine but putting the left hand cams on and doing the bolts hand tight the cams are harder to turn than the left side. (Its a 99 Turbo)
i dont want to fit it all together then firing her up and braking it again any help would be great.
Thanks
Nath

Make sure your buckets and shims are seated properly first.
Check to see if you have some sort of valve clearance under each cam lobe - if you have had the seats cut/valves faced, you can loose the clearance in some cases causing the cam to bind due to the valve being recessed in the head.
If you still have no luck - leave the seal carrier cap off and torque the other 2 caps to 20Nm - if it turns freely then its the seal cap causing the binding.
If it still binds, then back off each bolt a little to see which cap is making the cam bind up - you should see witness marks on the cap when it is removed, showing where it is tight on the cam journal.

When i recieved a set of heads about 4 months ago the cam caps were on the wrong way round on 1 cam causing this issue, may also be worth a check.
If i remember correctly all cam cap arrows should point towards the cam pulleys and the caps are numbered 2 and 4 & 1 and 3 make sure these caps are placed on corresponding engine pots.

Resistance should only be felt when the lobe is making contact with the bucket itself all other times as Uni-Ink said there should be no resistance.
But then saying there should be no resistance i have known people on here to run the heads even if there was a little resistance (only a little note) and things were oK. But this is not reccommended to anyone who does not know what we mean by little resistance as to much resistance could lead to a lot of issues.

Well i would say that you have got a lil problem there then macca, sounds like No3 pot is on its way out, due to the smoke and that.
Did you manage to run a compression check before pulling it all apart?
Valve moving about may be becuase of an impact of some sort, valve could be bent, or seat could have suffered some damage.
All are just assumptions above mate, but if you have pictures they might be handy, so i suggest you post em up on here.

in cylinder 3 the valves a stuck slightly open about 1-2mm
on the inlet a is 1 of the exhurst valves is the one that moved
i didnt do a comp check at first i thought it was the piston rings
ow i have seen this i think it might just be valve guides, valves, seals, and maybe springs?
do you think it could be piston rings?

If its just the 1 valve then it may be bent or the spring has had it.
If the defect is visible then i would work on that first. i.e. the valve.
You will have to explain the smoke thing a bit more though i think as you may be just refering to smoke off the heads and stuff. Some pics would be nice.
Oh and i would reccommend you start a new thread in your own name that way you will get a bit more attention.
