OK it is official... I am an idiot!!
After a traumatic experience spilling oil all over my landlord's drive I inexplicably did up my oil filter with a tool instead of fingers, and look at the state of it:
Will it still work OK or am I risking my engine and I should replace it (again!)
Aaaaaaaaghhh!

i would change it for the sake of £9. provided you drain the fluid into a very very clean tub i see no reason why you cant re use the fluid. what were you thinking tightening it up with a tool!! lol

I have seen one thing worse. 20 years ago nearly I was working on my car at the time when a guy on a set of ramps near me lowered his Triumph TR6 after draining the oil and changing the filter ready to fill it up. A while after he started I yelled stop as the oil was coming out from the drain hole. He had forgotten to put the drain plug back in, OOPS. I think it was mobil 1 at the time so quite expensive. I was decent and took him to the local Halfords to get some more.

.thanks for the replies (and deserved abuse!) i've bought a new filter (subaru us made in canada from scoobyworld but i guess it is the same).
I've done plenty of oil changes, don't know why it seemed like a good idea to do it up with a tool... I guess what i was thinking was my letting agreement that forbids working on cars in the yard rather than the job in hand!
Seriously though, 2 top tips, 1. Never ever use the stupid halfrauds oil drain container, the tray is far too shallow and it just doesn't drain into the container nearly fast enough, a washing up bowl has been perfect all these years why change?! 2. Copious amounts of lemon washing up liquid is a great way to get oil out of concrete drives, you'd never know the difference now.
Time to put on the false moustache and hope no one recognises me.
