Default Hard to start & backfire

Been looking for a thread on this but can not find one. I have a PPP STI 02 type UK with 41k miles and it's a bugger to get started more often than not. If I leave the car a few days a drive, it seems to take an age to start, that is I'd have to crank the starter over 4-5 times before it will fire up and when it does unburnt fuel in the exhaust ignites and it backfires.

Recently had it serviced at Culverwells and the plugs were changes for the standard types, which seemed to improve the response a tad, but the Subaru warranty is running out in a months time and if there is something seriously wrong or going bad they can foot the bill.

Can anyone please give me some pointers as to how I can diagnose this further or what I should look for, i.e. bad connections or broken vacumn pipes, or whatever, before I call the garage and ask them to sort it out ?

Thanks
