Should I clean a hot wire maf ?
I think that I have this correct but could be wrong !
Car is a 1998 Forester T/tb (the un-mappable ecu) and I can see a thin wire filament stretched vertically when the big air intake pipe (just after the air filter) is removed. This I assume is the hot wire maf ??
Now if I want to clean it to remove the possible oil/muck film contamination then I can spray it with carb cleaner but is it safe to wipe the filament--very-very--gently with a cotton bud or is it best left alone, ie , just sprayed ?
Cheers

I think carb/brake cleaner wholly evaporates off.
So best take the MAF off at night, spray it liberally, then hang it up in the shed to drip off and evaporate fully - should be perfect on the morning.
If you're impatient, you could try using an airline at a petrol station to blast the residue off...

They are very brittle and prone to damage
(evident when I once accidentally dropped a MAF housing on the carpet
- The wire filament broke making it nothing more than a expensive paper weight
