2ltr or 2.5 ?? or in the middle??
Folks,
I,ve decided i,m defo going to get the car forged later this year, BIG MISTAKE.. ££££££
Right, it,ll be mainly a road car tbh with maybe the odd trackday etc.
I,m not a numbers chaser never have been BUT as i,ve decided to go this route i,d like somehwere in the 450/400+ class if i can get 500 with turbo options then maybe, but tbh i think it,d be abit TOO balistic as a road car then, not as if 450 wont be..
So, i,d like some input of the folks in the know to what you,d maybe advise etc, before any smart alic says ask your Tuner, i,m just gauging your input first..
What turbo do you think will make a nice spooling, responsive car etc??
Yes a 2ltr will be revvy, 2.5 torquey, just give me your HONEST views folks please...

Banny,
Also i forgot to mention in my first post, i know i,ll be needing a box upgrade, again, i favour the 6 speed JDM i think, PPG would/is another option, BUT i ,ve heard these can be fragile when running upto 500ish... OR IS THIS SCOOBYNET GOSSIP again??

Pete it depends which kit you use, afaik the ppg fast road kit is rated to 450bhp but they have other kits that can handle much more.
Personally I would say for a high torque car a ppg box with straight cut 1st and 2nd, helical 3rd and 4th with a uk 5th would be perfect with a 3.9 final drive.
You will find the 6 speed too short for this type of car but for a revvy 2, 2.1 or 2.3 car the 6 speed will be ideal.

Banny,
I must admit, i do like the 5 speed box and i guess the 6 speeder would be adding a few more KG`s also, mind you i,d probably not notice that tbh.
Good link that too...

im in the same boat. i got a 2002 sti with a broken bottom end, was thinking of a full forge rebuild. then i came across a 2002 WRX which has had a 2.5 sti bottom end conversion but retained the WRX heads. it goes well but is totally standard so feels like its being held back by the exhaust/intake and maybe the wrx heads. I was thinking of putting the 2.5 bottom end in my sti??? Anyone got any ideas? I might just sell the WRX 2.5 and go silly on my 2.0. decisions decisions.

I am in the same boat as Pete, 2.5 would make a cracking road car but I like the revvy-ness of a 2.0, so I was thinking very hard about Engine Tuners 2.1 with a CDB.

I put a 2.5 in my Type R and it does have some good grunt.
I'm on stock sti bottom end though, p1 heads, cometic HG's, ARP studs, td05-20G so obviously can't go too mad but it makes 360/360 and comes in very hard from low down too.
The gearing makes for a lot of the fun though.
My clutch however is not playing ball.

More development work carried out today on our 2.1 stroker with the new TT S206 turbo. We will be giving one a try on a built 2.5 very soon too, so keep your eyes peeled for the results.

I suspect max bhp won't differ much, but your lowdown response sure will! Still.... for a 2.1ltr that response above is nothing to be sniffed against that peak bhp!
Good luck with your development work!

banny there quite immpresive but i tell you what my money is on the tt s206, its making 478 on a 2.1 with 450 torque and some seriously good spool and its a lot cheaper.the md are great but the tt s206 is the one for me. it only has 30 torque less than md on one of your graphs bare in mind yours is 2.5. cant wait to see what it will make on my 2.5.

Got to agree with Shaun here.
If you build a 2.5 with all the right bits then it will rev very well indeed.
You've said yourself Pete that its primarily a road car with some track work thrown in. A well built 2.5 with a MD321T from Mark was and probably still is the package to go for.
Lots of the big power boys have driven Alan Bell's old car and all of them agreed that it was the best road package any of them had ever driven and that was including their own cars with more power.
a 2.5 with an MD321 with upto 450/450 would make for a bloody quick car with incredible road manners too.
Had I not already gone rotated I'd certainly be looking at either an MD variant or one of AET's offerings that Shaun has.
I would also say that i'd only go for a 2.35 if I was wanting more than 500/500.
A well specced and well put together EJ257 with your existing heads would be just the ticket mate

That is a serioulsy good result.
That is also with stock heads iirc.
I think the same variant made over 600 on a E9 recently as well, so should make 500 with more boost on a Subaru as well.
Personally I would prefer this power graph over the MD one's shown above especially with a revvy 2.1.
Mus once your 2.5 is done it would be interesting to see what torque it makes, looks like a potentially excellent 500/500 turbo, especially when you consider how much it costs compared to the MD's...
Banny you got some food for though for sure!
