Default I DO NOT BELIEVE IT

Dropped the scooby off at the garage 3 months ago for a full rebuild due to spinning a bearing, was half contemplating havin a go rebuilding myself but wasn't 100% confident, anyway we agreed that i would buy all the parts and he'd just charge me for the labour, the shopping list was -

new version 9 crank
version 9 rods
mahle rings
acl bearings
uprated oil pump
oil cooler
water pump/thermo
new heads
re-surfaced/balanced flywheel
full gasket/seal/ kit etc
new belts/fluids
plus many other bits

anyway cut a long story short, went round to the garage last night, saw the car running and thought "finally" its done , as we chatted he mentioned he was strugling to get oil pressure before firing it up and after trying a few things got pressure and it fired first time !
then said all i have to do now is do the gearbox and diff oil, as he said this i saw the empty millers gear oil bottle( which i supplied) next to the car, then i thought if youv'e still got to do the gearbox oil, why is there an empty gearoil can on the floor, then i said "what you done with that oil, you've not put it in the engine have you ? then he went red and said err err no .

went round after work and he tells me when he was test driving it started knocking again, he's not admitted it but im sure he's put the millers gear oil in the engine, he's said he's going to sort it FOC but would putting gear oil in the engine cause this ?
Totaly Pi**ed off !

personaly i'd only ever use a reputable specialist just in case of something like this, but from what you've said he's held his hands up and is putting it right, ashame its gonna delay you getting your car back, but at least hes being open and honest and putting it right.

Agreed, we all make mistakes, some are more costly than others but everyone makes them, the guy is going to sort it out free of charge, its annoying for you but now he is working on your car for nothing, cut him a bit of slack.

cut him some slack ??

FFS he`s a mechanic and puts gear oil in the engine, WTF ??
slack, why ?

id be there when he drained the oil to see if it is gear oil,you cant miss the smell of gear oil !

and yes, gear oil in the engine will do that !

engine oil 10/40 for example

gear oil 70/90 !!!!!!!

He is fixing it free of charge due to his own mistake, I agree he should know better but as said above no one is perfect.

i removed his name, i did think that today, true he says he's going to sort it but to what standard, cant see him forking out for a new crank, oil pump/cooler which may now be damaged ! he's thinkin bearings & head gaskets is all thats needed ! we all make mistakes true and sods law its usually at the end of the job, but im not a trained mechanic and i was the one that noticed !?

Tell him when he strips the engine you want to see all of the parts to check whats damaged as you want to be certain every part that is damaged gets replaced.

Take pics of the parts if you want and stick 'em on here and then us scoobynetters can advise whats damaged and whats not?

I agree with many of the comments above.

Naming is harsh if he is sorting it foc.

But then he is liable for it and I have no doubt that you could take him to court and sue if he doesn't. I'm sure an expert would be able to derive if damage to the engine was caused by transmission fluid.

I would also demand that new everything was used regardless. He claims that pistons etc is all okay, but who knows down the line (no idea of long term impact myself).

He can then use your 'old' new parts for whatever he wants.

Good luck!
