Default Boast gauge

Ok, this may seem abit stupid of me, im new to owning a turbo charged car. I've had my impreza less than one week, but am hooked on it. I didnt ever think i could have as much fun as i do on my yamaha r6, but i am. With a boast gauge, does this just tell you when your car is boasting or does it do anything else? Should you get this fitted by a garage?

Thanks
Dan

Yes. It lets you know how much positive boost is entering the engine when the turbo is spinning. Most gauges are calibarted form about -1bar, through 0bar and onto +1, 2 or 3bar. The minus bar values are telling you that the turbo's not boosting and the air entering the engine is being sucked in by the engine, and not pushed in by the turbo.

The gauges come with the scale in PSI or BAR. 14.5psi = 1bar, so the psi gauges are more 'granular' or have more resolution. Basiaclly you use the boost gauge as a safety device to monitor whether the engine is dangerously overboosting (or, of course, not boosting enough).

The best gauges are the pure analogue mechanical ones. The needles of this type respond immediately to the raw boost signal coming from the inlet manifold. The other type is the electro-mech. ones, where the boosted air movement is converted into an electrical signal - their needles have a less immediate, damped action.

Well a 'boast' gauge is for pub talk
It just basically tells you when you are on boost and how much.

Hee hee, I meant to write something equally witty but, alas, I'm a half-wit
