Yours being a 98 I don't believe its as much of an issue as it is for MY99/00 cars.

99/00 cars have this fragile maf which can **** the engine up. I think the one with the green blob of paint is the more robust one - least that was what colour the one I bought for mine was.

its the label on the side of the electrical housing that people refer to as the colour mate as far as i know there are grenn,purple and orange label mafs hope that helps you

I'd be interested in the answer to this one cause i think i need a new one, why do yhey have different colour labels, did subaru modify them through the years, do they only work in a specific model/year car???

IIRC...

purple - wire type, Legacy

green - wire type, MY93-96 Impreza

orange - wire type, MY97/98 Impreza (larger diameter sensor than MY93-96)

small cassette - film type, MY99/00

so what would be the bad thing is a green one was fitted to a car that needed an orange one or a purple one was fitted to an impreza etc ?

Forget it. Just use the correct one for your car - it's too much of a ball ache. Probably.

If the worng MAF is fitted, the way it sends it's output voltage to the ECU may differ to the OEM one, for example, etc, etc....
