Default 5 speed to 6 speed

right this is for anyone who have changed their 5 speed box to a 6 speed. I currently have a p1 with the STD 5 speed box and my clutch has gone so I am off to API for it to be replaced. I have gone for one of their updated clutches and flywheel to handle a bIg bhp build as I think I amgoing for a 2.5ltr in the next few months. The thing is I have also went for a 6 speed box too incase of a big build. I choose the 6 speed over a ppg kit due to cost and the fact the 5 speed seems to sound stressed
On motorway driving always felt like it needs an extra gear.

What I would like to know is how does the 6 speed feel compared to the short ratio from the p1 box, it always felt quite rapid to me if that makes sense and now I am a little concerned it may make the car feel slower if the gears are a longer ratio.

Has anyone got any views does it change the feel of the car? Do you regret the change or are happy with it and why?

Put a 6 speed in my old UK turbo (view my scooby for the spec) i now have a V5 Type R, if i was to go down the high route again i would defo go PPG before fitting a 6 speed again.
The 6 speed took a lot of getting used to and it always seemed like i was in the wrong gear, plus it is quite a bit heavier than a 5 speed.
I think it will be down to personal preference really, i prefer the 5 speed.

cheers dean, just getting a bit worried it may not be the bet route to take as i assume the ratios will be longer which will make it fel slower if that makes sense any how there is nothing wrong with my 5 speed so i will have a spare box and if i can t get used to it i can always have that built to a ppg and dropped in

any more views on the 5 - 6 speed box

It depends what flavour 6 speed you have - in my P1 i have an 04 JDM Sti/spec c dccd box with 3.9 diffs and it is a very close ratio box albeit with a 170mph top speed.

It wouldn't be good for drags as you'd be changing gears too often ( but I'm not into that) but for track and B roads it is good. The gears are shorter than the P1 5 speed Oem box - by nearly 10mph in 1st,2nd and less so in third.
6th is pretty much the same ratio as the P1 5th . Nice box, short throw etc.

As fatboy says, go for a JDM 6 speed to maintain rapid gearchange/great ratios and all the durability that they have over the 5 speed box.

I've got a JDM 01 6 speed in my Classic (2.5) the ratios are great for blasting along B roads. Motorway driving is a very tiring affair as 70 mph at 3k revs is not that pleasant.

I'm planning to change to a Helical cut PPG (funds/job permitting) as the 5speed UK ratios are better in my opinion for the 2.5.

if you aren't going above 350lbft of torque, your P1 box should be ok.

going for a 2.5ltr with a md321t+ as stands at the minute so i need a new gearbox as the std wont last long if at all.

how does the uk 6 speed compare to the jdm box, is the gearing that differnent?

are the uk boxes set with that much longer gearing as when i test drove a sti ppp the 1st and 2nd gear sis not seem to last that long before the next change. just wanted to get some other peoples views as it gets fitted enxt friday all being well.

surely a uk box with a short shift stick will feel similar to a 5 speed / jdm box in ratio etc

regards

I,ve read a few posts now that the PPG is not the best if going over 450, correct, or in-correct???

6 speed seems to be the way forward imo. I have got a Uk box going in so will be hoping that when I do the 2.5 and md321t the I'm and jdm thing won't make a considerable difference as I should be grinning ear to ear as it is

right thanks mate so the uk and jdm are the same and it will make no difference then, and get the bonus of longer 5 and 6 for motorway.

So does Anyone know how the ratio's are between the 5 speed and 6 speed 1-4 are they similar

I have a UK 6 speed fitted to my V4 type R and it feels much longer geared than the original. For a 2.5 then it may be a good option, but for me I'd have gone for shorter gears (in a 6 speed) if I had the choice again.
