Exclamation this might be a really obvious question?

if i run 215/45 x17 tyres on rear and 215/40 x 17 on the front of my 1995 legacy gt estate, will it knacker the diffs/gearbox???

I'd say your taking a risk with transmission wind up. your tyres need to be the same size.

unless you go wider. for example. 215-45-17 f and 225-40-17 r

basic rule of thumb tyre width goes up by 10 tyre wall comes down by 5 to give the same rolling radius.

sorry to hijack this thread i have 215/45/17 tyres all round was wondering if i could replace the rears with 225/45/17 would that be ok.

If you go to 225 you will have to come down to 40 on the wall size.

ie 225/40/17

225 is the tyre width in mm
40 is the aspect ratio - % of tyre width for the wall
17 wheel size.

in case you were unsure what everything means.

The rolling diameter of the tyres must be equal or you will wind the centre diff up!

Manual or auto is relevant here!

Having said that, in my opinion and experience (running 5% different profiles as you suggest) is its not enough to cause problems and will drive and survive just fine.
