Definative Answer: What Turbo?
....SHOULD be fitted to my MY97 WRX GC8D48D. It is fitted with a TD04 L as far as I can make out. What is fitted to yours as standard?

Yes, after all that shenanigans, the OEM fitment should be the IHI VF22 for a MY97 WRX saloon.
Bottom line is that if you want to mod, then your 'wrong' TD04L will only get you to about 280bhp
, whereas the VF22 is prob good for upto 350bhp 
...
