Default budget brakes

I own a 2002 bugeye wrx, which has 4 pot subaru calipers on the front and 2pot subaru on the back, its all standard including discs and pads.does anyone else think the standard setup doesnt match the power of the car?
I find when you use the car fast it cant cope?
I cant afford to upgrade to brembos or anything like that so does anyone know how to improve the system on a budget?
Also lately when i brake, just before the car comes to a standstill whilst braking the footpedal jus presses right to the floor [whilst my foot is still on it] like its not connected or anything and a wierd noise comes.A minute later the abs light flicks on the dash, whats going on????
Please help

They're intertwined stainless-steel-covered flexible brake hoses. Under the hydraulic pressure, the metal covering deosn't expand anywhere near as much as the normal std-fit 'naked' flexible brake lines.

So when you fit a full set of 4 of these braided hoses, then a lot more of the brake-pedal pressure actually gets delivered to the pistons and, ultimately, onto the pad/disc interface, for mcuh improved braking performance.

A great complimentary mod to these braided hoses is to also fit the brake master cylinder stopper brace... Plus, of course, DOT 5.1 brake fluid.

Brembos all the way. I know you said you couldnt afford them but I managed to find a set of Brembo calipers, discs and pads for £400 and sold my 4 pots, discs and pads for £200.
Still running the original brake fluid and hoses and they are 10 times better, no joke.
No brake fade, instant pedal response. Rather than spend £200 on 4 pots uprated discs, pads, hoses and fluid, advertise your 4 pot system for sale and put a wanted thread out for a Brembo set up.

Wouldn't he need new wheels as well? I didn't think Brembos would fit under the standard WRX wheels.

First option is to get uprated pads, maybe Ferodo or Mintex, also new disks if required. Braided hoses as mentioned will help and improve feel too.

Yes, you're right. I have 18''s.

I believe spacers can be bought to address this problem though.

See my post 2

If you are not sure whet to do then you need to go and see someone and look at what's on offer..where are you based. ??

The Subaru 4 pot OEM calliper is relly pretty good and for the power of your bugeye just a change of pad and disk should be enough. you can go to the extreme and buy a bigger disk / pad set from somewhere like Godspeed (Ian Godney) but a bit OTT.

Performance friction do a reasonable pad / disc combo but if you want to buy online and get them fitted locally try and contack camskill and see what they have to offer.

You will have a hundred different answers to your question LOL

Shaun

PS I've been through pad / disc change / big disc upgrade and currently run 12 pot Tar-ox

budget is not often a good word to use when tuning, but times being as they are its sometimes necessary to do the best possible whil;e keeping a handle on things.

I would:
change the front discs and front and rear pads, get grooved but not drilled discs and a decent fast road pad.
Change the fluid to DOT5 or better and give them a damn good bleed.
Change to braided hoses, I use goodridge but there are others however I cannot comment on the quality.
Should be able to do that lot for under £300, spend a day fitting it all yourself and it will be a massive step up from what you have now.

next option is something like the K-sport set up which is everything you need for the fronts for about £500 upwards.

The bias on braking is massively to the front so you want to concentrate on this area, at the backs the hoses, new fluid and decent pads should be plenty with your 2-pots.

Fairplay and kudos to you for actually doing things the right way round and concentrating on the braking

You might want to do the hoses and fluid first as you may have low fluid or an airlock causing your slack pedal issue
