a clunking sound from the back left of the car when changin gear ???
Any suggestions on what could cause a clunking sound from the back left of the car when changin gear ???
i think it may be the exhaust knocking i nthe rear diff as it's very close.
I have tried to move it away and have also checked the diff and drive shafts, everything seems ok though..... ????????
just a little concearned about the knocking thats all.
Cheers
Chris.

I had a horrible clunking sound from the back of mine and it turned out to be the suspension - a known problem with Subarus of a particular age (mines an MY04) all covered under extended warranty.

Check the hub nut is tight. To check just look at the 32mm nut and ensure the staking is in the driveshaft groove. If its forced its way out then nut will be loose. I had this happen on a front shaft and it made a clunk/click in low gears on and off the gas.
A worn or loose roll bar drop link will make a lot of noise as well.
