what do manifold spacers do??? ive heard lots of people fitting them but not sure why they are needed

 

they stop heat transfer from block to manifold creating a colder manifold, should make air colder / denser, dont know if it works though or if the benifits are noticeable

 

Either used to make the inlet manifold sit higher to allow a larger diameter turbo inlet hose to be fitted and/or to reduce heat transfer from the block to inlet manifold, possibly reducing power loss through high inlet temps.

 

thats why my silicon turbo pipe was a swine to fit then, where can i grt some for a v3 sti???

 

they insulate your inlet manifold from the block and therefore prevent unwanted heating of the the intake air which has just been 'cooled' by your intercooler. good efficiency mod if you;re taking the manifoled off some time.

I made my own, cost £15, and made the header tank insulators too.
Befor fitting them, when the engine was hot, i couldn't lean on the inlet, now i can no problems, much cooler.
Do the throttle coolant bypass too while your at it!

should i go for the insulated ones or the normal ones as they are higher? going to do the throttle body mod at week end aswell

 

Anyone got any drawings, with dimensions? And material type?

 

I used 10mm tufnol, and a gasket as a stencil for the shape.
I searched online for a company to supply it, i'll try and find it for you.

Think I'll give them a go. On a budget with UK97 and unmapable ecu. Probably won't make much difference by themselves, but every little helps, especially if cost effective (read cheap)

It's easy to work with, just make sure you use a mask, it's very fine. Theres enough to make two sets, plus the header tank insulators

Whats the throttle body coolant mod??????(sorry to butt in)

 

The throttle body is heated using the engine coolant. This is to prevent the throttle sticking due to icing up in cold weather. Something that is pretty unlikely after the charge air has been shoved thru a turbo, even with the best intercooler in the world. Think it may have been a hangover from the normally aspirated cars.

Anyway the mod is to remove the piping that connects the cooling system to the throttle body and basically short circuit the system by fitting a loop pipe.

The idea is that, after all the trouble of cooling the charge air it is not heated up again, even slightly. The theory being that cooler air is denser and gives more power (basically).

Not done it myself yet but planning to when I fit the homemade manifold insulators.

It is also very cost effective ie free, and easily reverseable. Never heard of any one having any problems with this mod.
Someone will be along to correct me later.

 

Why has eveyone said the manifold spacers stop heat transfer from block to manifold when it clearly bolts to the heads?

I have TB coolant bypass, 2 minute job but I had the remains of an old manual choke conversion kit with the exact right pipe for the job!

Header tank isolation using £5 worth of tuffnol, have some left if anyone wants me to knock up a set, pm me (at cost...)

when doing the tb conversion do you do the idle conrol valve aswell?? mines a v3 if that makes a diff

 

No, it has no effect on the intake temps, i left it alone.

Don't bypass the idle valve. It needs that water temp feed in the bottom of it to work properly when cold.
