No, you measure all you clearences when built. ie heads torqued down.
Strip apart again ie, cams out
remove buckets and shims
measure existing shims
do some sums to work out the required new shims.
rebuild, and measure again.
strip again if youve done your sums wrong. LOL
shims are approx £5each btw
Clearences are 0.25mm exhaust, 0.2mm inlet.
Oh they can be ground down on a oilstone

You need to turn the cam to a position where the base circle i.e off the lobe part of the cam is towards the bucket. Then use a set of bent feeler gauges to get in. There should be a slight resistance and all faces should be clean before carry this out. To ensure your off the lift of the cam, postion the highest point of the cam away from the bucket although a little either side is fine.
If you down load the manual for your car it shows you with pictures how to carry this out + the correct clearances and tolerances will be stated in there.
