adj shims
i assume that when u adj the shims, to get the current clearance u must remove the shim from the top of the bucket and measure top of bucket to cam, and shim according to clearance required. MY98 WRX

No, you measure all you clearences when built. ie heads torqued down.
Strip apart again ie, cams out remove buckets and shims measure existing shims do some sums to work out the required new shims. rebuild, and measure again. strip again if youve done your sums wrong. LOL shims are approx £5each btw Clearences are 0.25mm exhaust, 0.2mm inlet. Oh they can be ground down on a oilstone |
how easy shud it be to fit the feeler gauge under the cam lobe, and do u check the bottom of cam to bucket, top, side etc.
as the buckets are slightly angled, id imagine u also need 2 angle lobe to get correct clearance |
It should be at an imaginary 90 degrees, plus when testing with a feeler i go for a (slight drag) when testing. But its down to "feel" really.

as the buckets are slightly angled, id imagine u also need 2 angle lobe to get correct clearance You need to turn the cam to a position where the base circle i.e off the lobe part of the cam is towards the bucket. Then use a set of bent feeler gauges to get in. There should be a slight resistance and all faces should be clean before carry this out. To ensure your off the lift of the cam, postion the highest point of the cam away from the bucket although a little either side is fine. If you down load the manual for your car it shows you with pictures how to carry this out + the correct clearances and tolerances will be stated in there. I hope this helps |
