I won't say that you can't use it, but the recommended oil is Castrol Syntrax 75w90 for both the box & rear diff.

Yea I'm sure it's a good oil, but if you get problems with difficult gear selection or crunching gears then swap to the Castrol as it has an addative in it for the baulk rings.

Most Subaru's run a viscous LSD at the rear, in which case, yes, Syntrax is the recommended oil.

If you have the race/rally "Plate Type" rear diff then you should run an LS type oil such as an EP 90LS

If your rear diff tends to bang & clatter when you turn a corner at slow speed then you have the plated set up, if on the other hand your diff is silent & it doesn't sound like it's trying to escape from the casing, you have a viscouse one installed.

I can vouch for syntrax, I had notchy 2nd gear and it wouldnt even engage when cold. I switched to syntrax and the difference was immediate and superb.
2nd gear is now perfect hot and cold.
