Guys installing my turbo(used)
Had to remove up pipe downpipe and put in.
I started the car and there was smoke from underneath
Dont know if it could be join between turbo and up pipe/downpipe or if it is something else or normal.
There was a little oil(i think) underneath as well.
Any ideas
I did spill a lot of coolant down through the engine
Im scraed to start it untill I get advice

cheers mate, im scared i have done something wrong but when i start the engine it sounds ok.
not sure if the tiny puddle of oil was just due to the install
Cheers
Anybody else comment please
Any important areas to monitor?
Can u knacker your engine if engine started with no revs and turbo installed wrong?

Ha thats the exact same!!!
Right well managed to get rid of smoke from engine bay.
BUT....discovered a leak of oil underneath the car.
Tightened all hoses and still had the issue.
Nothing for it but stripping turbo off again.........ahhhhh
Discovered the oil outlet hose was not fastened properly.im gonna put a mini gasket on it tomorrow as well.
All came about as the td05 outlet hose was too short to meet the rubber pipe so swapped it round with the td04 one........and let my mate to tighten it!! tool!! lol
Anyways hopefully tomorrow all will be good and then its injectors and spark plugs.

Guys sorted the oil leak
let it tick over for 15 mins and no problems and no smoke
Drove it up the road and the bay was smoking quite a lot(clear smoke)
Let it cool down
Does this sound normal?

Mine was doing that today after I picked it up from the garage. They'd replaced my cambelt with a different brand as the previous one was noisy. They always remove the rad in the garage I use for the cambelt and they aren't the tidiest when it comes to refilling the coolant. Three times it's been in, three times it's smoked when it's come out. Oil temps and pressures are fine and water temps and fan cut-in is spot on. My smoke was identical to the earlier picture and the smell of the smoke gets right down your throat.

Yeah mate my temps never moved either on dash.
Just that when i got up the road and it almost smelt like a burning rubber smell if you know what i mean.
Smoked for ten minutes after a 6 minute journey.
I took heat deflection wrap off the coolant pipe going into turbo, hoefully it isnt a pipe burning.
Hope that makes sense.

The smell of burning oil/coolant is not far off burning rubber, after all rubber is an oil product. It will keep smoking after as the fluid is still there and the engine is still hot. When I fitted my oil gauges I didn't tighten up the t-piece and it pissed oil all over the block. I whipped the intercooler off and cleaned up as much as I could, but it smoked for weeks after that.
If was a catastrophic leak you'd know about it, I've had a radiator let go on me before now

cheers mate
You know that way that i bought the turbo second hand and you know that way you over worry that it might be knackered.
Strange thing was it didnt smoke with that smell untill i actually drove the car after having the engine running for 10 mins.
Is there any way the engine could get damaged if the turbo was faulty?

If the oils seals are shot it'll burn a bit of oil, but you'll see the smoke out of the exhaust. Unless the compressors or blades disintegrate and go through your engine I would imagine you will be fine.
As for not smoking to start with, until the engine heats up there's nothing to make the fluids evaporate, so until it warms up you won't get any smoke. I don't get it until the first roundabout after I've left the garage, it's fine for the first mile or so, and then it's clear on the next run.

Without getting in and checking, it'll probably be the oil feed for cooling the turbo. And it's too cold to go and do that now but looking at the diagram on the parts catalogue it looks about right. The narrow ones coming over the top are the wastegate/solenoid vacuum hoses, but they are easy to do and you shouldn't have had to take them off at the turbo.

I just removed the one from the up pipe as I have heard from sources that when running high boost there is a possibility the 02 sensor can crumble and that means trouble.
Please correct me if im wrong guys though
Thanks for all the comments people!
