Default exhaust question

hello all

i've purchased a milltek downpipe 3'' bore and it has a flat flange where it joins to the centre section which is a problem because the cobra 3'' centre section i have has a flange and then it opens a bit further to allow for the standard donut gasket?

does anyone know any centre sections with a flat flange that will mate up to the milltek downpipe?? and i'll send the cobra centre back

cheers Jim

Jim, if your downpipe has a genuine 3" bore at the centre-section flange end, then I'm certain you can just mate it up to the centre-section's flange - assuming it's a normal 'blunderbuss's bowl'-like one with the 'loose' free flange - using a flat 'diamond' shaped gasket (instead of the normal donut gasket).

The flange bolt holes should be elongated on the centre-section flange, so as to be able to fit the wider pitched holes on the downpipe's flange.

You'll need a larger 3" diamond gasket to fit though (instead of the normal 2.5" one). Cobra themselves do their own (see 2nd item from bottom): ExhaustsUK: Suppliers of Cobra Sport Performance Exhausts

Or RCM: Roger Clark Motorsport - RCM Product Detail

Or eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hks-Exhaust-Gasket-76mm-3-inch-ID-for-Subaru-Impreza_W0QQitemZ260334079631QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item260334079 631&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1299|66%3A 2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

hi joz, the problem is this centre section has a flare thats bigger than 3'' after the flange which is actually welded in place. i held the flared piece up to my standard downpipe and it fits perfectly over the donut gasket but because now i've got the flat flange on the milltek it won't butt up

The two flanges aren't supposed to make contact, if that's what you mean. The donut sits proud by about half an inch (although may be less because of your larger bowl?) and is designed to act like a universal joint, so that the system can easily sit in place without any unwanted tension to it. See here...

That's why there are those 'take-up' springs for the bolts - they can be tightened to a lesser or greater degree to help fine-tune the postion...

Sounds luuurvely - nice and deep.

What gasket's did you need in the end? Any fabrication required, etc, etc...?
