I believe the speedo sensor is in the actual speedo head so that may need removing and investigating.

I had a problem with my v3 wrx where it wouldn't start or would run really poorly and the only error code it would spit out was 33. It turns out it was a bit of a red herring as the cause was actually a buggered fuel pump.
So... even though i'm no expert i'd always be a bit more sceptical about the codes in future. In your case it might be right so you never know, but the fault codes on classics are a bit agricultural in comparison to the newer stuff. A sensor can still return a "normal" signal even it's not working normally.

The ecu gets the signal from the main speedo cluster, so if all the speedo cables are fine then the problem point towards the speedo cluster itself.
Unless you have a wiring.

Have you checked both speedo cables ie the short cable thats fitted to the gearbox and the longer cable?
