Default Outdun by a Focus On Roundabouts! What suspension???

ok been out for a little drive in the new village ive moved to (Daventry).

anyway saw some nice cars and cruised a long exploring the area getting use to the roads until this orange focus came right behind me, have no clue what it is, never been interested in them, hoowever he then overtook me on the national speed limit road, and as you know daventry is full of national speed limit roads going to roundabout after roundabout etc.

and this idiot was going off at other exits and noticing i wasnt chasing him so came back like 3 times and overtook me some more.. so i had enough.. saw the national speed limit sign and planted it..

ggave the **** eye contact as i overtook and then slowed down for roundabout anyway i turned off to go home but this fool wasnt leaving me!

lol so i fort lets follow him as he clearly knows the roads.. so i stayed on his bumper on all the stretches of roads then overtook when safe.. but when it came to roundabouts it felt like my car wasnt gripping at all.. and i was pushing it.. its on standard suspension . anyway at like the 6 roundabouts we crossed he nearly overtook me on them.. as soon as road straightened up i was gone again..

showed me my handling needs work doing.. i dont want nowt to expensive.. what do you recommend? do springs make a difference? or should it be coilies? plus antirollbar and lift kkits etc.?

p.s.whats the stats on these focus's? seemed to handle well!i think we need a road driving stories section on the forum!

Cheers

If it was Orange it sounds like it was a Focus ST so don't be too ashamed as they have a fairly good chassis.

A standard scoob will tend to understeer on roundabouts especially this time of year.

Its a bit of an open question as we don't know your budget but take a look at
PowerStation for a good road/track setup their Stage 3 /T25 setup is pretty hard to beat especially at the price its offered at.

If that's a little too much for you then look at both the other packages. For instant improvements these offer excellent value for money.

yeah it was an 07 plate orange one, not fast on straights at all

as for budget , well the car is only used for fast road and not track days.. just seen the apex coilover group buy and the price seems reasonable'! would that be a good solution? as thats actually the sort of price im looking at.
p.s. will look at the powerstation website now. Thanks

ok looking at the site..

stage 2 would be good

Stage 2
Eibach Springs
Rear Adjustable Roll Bar
Anti-Lift Kit
Front Adjustable Roll Bar
4-Wheel Alignment
£720* + VAT

what would be better the above? or the apex coilovers?

p.s. ive just fallen in love with that porsche brake kit! does anyone have that on their cars?

That's because 'only' 222bhp is lugging around c.1392kg! (assuming std) i.e. 162bhp per ton

They can easily be remapped to 300 and beyond, although I'm sure he just had a fruity exhaust. That said, even std they're fab sounding, as the engine is Volvo's warbling 2.5 litre in-line 5-potter. Sound (a bit) like an old Audi quattro.

You could have the best suspension setup in the world and still have poor cornering speed if you're tyres are shot / poor make / wrong pressures.

Check your tyres before spend loads of cash elsewhere!

This would be better than just coilovers on their own. The boys at Powerstation really know what their doing with suspension. Do a search for them, I've read nothing but good reports. That little lot will change your cars handling for the better, instantly!!

They may have a good chassis but they will understeer like your Scoob aswell as having to scramble for FWD traction rolling out of the roundabout.

I wouldn't worry about your set up as he clearly knows the roads and sunk a few more brave pills than you before heading out that day...lol.

Once you have been out and about toying you will soon learn where to brake, where you can plant it etc. and will be able to judge how fast you can safely take them at ;-)

This road sounds like the A5? Quite a long straight road which then comes up to a lot of roundabouts and an industrial estate?

I get a lot of people trying it down there.

You would be quicker than the Focus, unless hes had some tuning, as they are slow.

As for handling, they're meant to handle quite well, but I guess it just depends if there driver knows how to drive.

and i was much quicker than him, lol didnt even have to try really to keep up, just on the roundabouts he was taking them much faster than me and came up the inside.. and then when we went back downt he same road and all the way around the roundabout it didnt feel like my car was gripping..

he was really trying to take advanatge of my weakness of roundabouts but still coudnt get back in front lol

Lol, The A5 is a sweet road.

Got a bit of family in Daventry, So I'm there quite a bit. Will keep my eye out for you.

I see alot of Impreza's in Daventry! My mate who lives there has a 700ish hp STi 555.

I have a set of Prodrive Blue springs for sale in Leamington, that and an STi or whiteline rear ARB will get you handling a LOT better for less than £100 in parts.

There is a Total Garage on the way out of Daventry towards Weedon, Just by Intaparts Breakers.. If you know where that is? I haven't seen a Shell about Daventry though .

No its a Classic 555 STi, dark blue, gold wheels, rather tatty looking, with a big HKS intercooler. It was originally built at WRC Technologies in Silverstone, but since then he has rebuilt it for bigger power. Aeromotive fuel system etc etc.

I havent seen this 53 plate, Definitly keep my eye out for that!!

What is your a dark grey Classic STi?

I've just booked in for many things at Powerstation, including the remainder of the T25 handling kit, ASTs etc.

I enquired about the Porsche brakes and really had to bite my tongue and not say "I'll take them too". It would've been more than my life/marriage is worth.

I love 'em. Maybe one day.
