if this is possible would i also be able to fit a dumpvalve???

if so, what elese would need to be changed to make this possible

Sell the GX and buy a turbo model. It will be much, MUCH cheaper, easier and infinitely better. It's not as simple as you think, and you would need at modify the gearing, differentials, brakes, suspension and more to make it a safe, balanced and drivable machine. Autotrader, eBay and Pistonheads awaits your attention.

Oh, and all turbo'd Scoobs already have a dump valve which is perfectly suited to the car. I'm guessing you want to potentially spoil the performance and reliability by fitting a silly noisy one to impress teenage boys on council estates by making each gear change sound like a bus opening its doors, which is a waste of money.

Thanks you for your kind words, I am new to scoobys and was not aware that they had dump valves already fitted. I don’t live on a council estate and my father bought me a Subaru 2001 non turbo and I was hoping to turn it in to a project and was advised that this was a good site to ask qs, but did not realise that i would get such a facetious response

Dont bother trying to turn a non turbo into a turbo.

Would take a lot more money that just buying a turbo to start with.

if i was you i would run the non turbo for a while and save up for a turbo.

cheers

Welcome to the club!

It's really not worth the hastle. The turbo has better brakes, suspension, interior, bonnet scoop(you'll need this unless fitting a front mount intercooler), body kit, stronger gearbox, etc, etc.......
Oh, and the complete engine and loom from the turbo. Starts to get very expensive!

dump valves are a contentious subject on here mate ---- and will always get people going off on one!! When you get one it doesn't take long for the novelty factor to wear off (noise) and it then begins to get on your nerves when you're just cruising around and every time you change gear your car goes pssshhhhhhh ! VTA dumpvalves (the ones that make the noise) can have a negative effect on how the car drives too, which is why mine has the hardest spring so it only makes a noise/dumps at high revs circa 6000rpm

Hi there,

These guys know from experience that you’re not just adding a turbo, you’re adding a load of hp and lots of toque, meaning it’s going to need to be a different car, but the same shell.

To make a turbo:

You’ll be better off buying a crash damaged impreza, stripping it down, and the same with your NA, and building one car from that pile of stuff. Then it’ll defiantly still have its annoying quirks and won’t be any better than your average scooby.

To buy a scooby turbo:

Save your time and get one in p/x for almost nothing (in comparison to the time and money to build one). Then you can join the rest of us trying your best, and throwing all your money, into keeping the silly thing running and going slightly faster :-)

Your falling into the trap of more power, more power, more power without looking at the handling, steering, braking and other aspects that will keep you alive.

Its all very well sticking a turbo lump in a GL but how are you going to stop it?

Just because it has AWD doesnt actually mean it will handle in the bends with more power either and it will certainly need decent brakes and wheels added to the christmas list.

By the time you factor in the cost of the all the mods to make the car fast and safe, plus the higher than average insurance as its modified you wont be able to afford the petrol to put in it.

thanks to all that have responded, i am now going to sell mine and get the turbo and then start putting my money into that. i have a look at doing a park ex but was told by the garage he would only give me £1500. Sick the car cost twice that. anyway thanks again for all your comments.

Always buy/sell privately. Get more for yours than p/x'ing and then pay less for your new motor too. A dealer will charge you top book when he sells to you and bottom for your trade-in

A wise decision to sell up and buy a proper turbo.
