Default Oil viscosity - MY06 STI

Sorry to ask this one again (I'm rubbish at searching).

I have an MY06 STI, which came with a litre of Shell Helix 5W 40 as top up.

I've check the manual and it reccomends 5W 30???

Can someone tell me which is correct please?

Thanks

I use Fuchs Supersyn something or other from GSF (5w-40) as I tow occasionally, but after reading lots of posts on this either 5w-40 or 5w-30 should be ok, but Magnatec is a no-no apparently....

ETA for future searches:
Fuchs TITAN SUPERSYN 5W-40 High Performance, Fully Synthetic, Engine Oil

GSF part number 98085A.
You may want to double check the prices.

Thanks.

I'll check with the dealers at the next service, but glad to hear that either is ok.

I guess Magnatec is out because it's part synthetic?

Helix is fully synthetic.

Either are OK.
The 40 is arguably more suited to summer temps.
I dont think topping a 30 with a 40 is a problem as long as they are BOTH fully synthetic.

That's correct, 5w-30 or 5w-40 is the right spec oil.

Opie Oils - Engine Oils

The 5w30 is a fully synthetic oil that the dealers use, a 5w40 or 10w40 are also usable, the 10w40 is definately a semi synthetic as stated in the user handbook on which oils you can use, the most commonly used will be the 10w40 unless you state otherwise

Tony

Pretty much all 5w-30's are fully syn because of the 5w cold crank which cannot be achieved with mineral oils as at -30degC they thicken too much to meet the flow at low temps.

Fully is always a better option for stressed scooby engines as it gives better long term protection.

Cheers
