Things to look for when buying a scooby?
Hi all. (not sure if this is the right catagory to put this thread in but I hope so.)
I have arranged to go and have a look at an impreza wrx on this weekend but with me being completely new to the world of subarus and being only 19 I have no clue what to look for in signs of wear and tear or any bad signs to check for underneath / engine bay etc.
I was just wondering if anyone could give me a hand and let me know if there is any special signs to look for or is it just the same as buying any other car?
Thanks a lot.

Just realised dude.. its not the WRX model as it doesn't have a turbo.
Its just the 2.0L Impreza Sport.. but with the wrx / sti bodywork etc.
Sorry about that.

The bodywork will increase the premium of your insurance because its a more desirable car, check this with the insurance co also
But if you dont know what your doing, take someone along who does
Depending on the age/condition/service history, your going to need a list to check, and its quite a long one, from oil levels to white gunk around the oil fillter cap, oil film in the coolant (both indications of head gasket problems), overheating, ensuring the car is cold when you see it so you know there is no cold starting issues, check the lights (all bulbs working etc) the list goes on

Bit far for me to pop over and offer assistance then lol
It should be cheap for a start, WRX prices have come down hugely so I'd expect Sports to be very cheap now. Don't be encouraged by a car with 6x9s and a bad boy bonnet, it's probably been hammered to death, it's a buyers market so hold out for a clean one.

surely the problem is that a humble sport could well be worth more than a turbo, depending on other factors off course
but I wouldn't mind betting that two cars in identical condition one a sport and a wrx, would see the sport selling far quicker and at pretty much the same price as the wrx

Check service history for cam belt service find out when this was done as it is quite expensive. also check for any leaks around the diff drive shafts. i learnt the hard way about the diffs. the guy i bought it off was doing his own services but didn't check the rear diff. diff went up in flames when i got 70 miles away from the guys house. cost me £100 to get it off the motorway and the garage quoted £1100 to fix it. good job i'm handy with a spanner and got a few mates. £200 in the end. you hear any whining just walk away there will be others. Any smoke, forget it.
