Default Can I get away with decat?

Thinking of putting a decat down pipe on my MY97 WRX. The only mods are K@N panel filter, samco Y-pipe, centre de-cat and Prodrive back. So is it advisable without a re-map? Obviously a re-map on this MY requires a new ECU and havent heard anything else about ECUTEK becoming available for a while. The Engines been rebuilt by scooby clinic 15k ago,

cheers jonny.

check your ecu may be 4 pin at that age. thats the change ffrom 3 to 4.

my 97wrx is only 3 pin but some are 4 and your right you can't map them but i believe you can chip them and then map them.

Thanks I'll do that but still not sure if It needs mapping at this level, allthough I know I would gain more power from a remap. Would it be safe without?

Hi Jonny,

Looks like sensible starting mods you have there. How does it feel compared to standard? Only asking as it seems I am heading down the same route.

cheers

All the supposid experts on here will tell you that you need a re-map.
U DON'T!!!!
To get the full benefit from it you will need a re-map but it won't blow up without it!!

Currently just a full 3" de-cat and HKS ssqv and it has made all the difference already wait till the turbo and re-map are done amongst other things

you do risk boost spiking and it will be a bit further from ideal map... whether either is enough to cause serious damage is very unlikely, but possible.

Hi mate, to be honest it doesnt feel much different from standard. The centre decat didn't make much difference apart from noise but the when I fitted the samco Y-pipe It did seem to pick up better and you can see why when you look at the pipe it replaces. I'm aiming to keep it simple i.e exhaust and induction. Also done few small mods like removing the throttle body coolant feed and intercooler tilt and splitter but the difference is negligable.

So the general thoughts are its safe to do. Will I see any noise difference? I want it louder but want to keep the prodrive BB, I like its understated look. Cheers for the replys
