Question Knocking noise, need advice

Hi people
Just bought my new impreza a 54 plate wrx turbo. When i set off at like 0 to 15 miles an hour the rear wheels make a knocking noise. when i bought the car there wasnt no noise. Ive been back in touch with the person i bought it from he says its the hand brake shoes that have weathered and seized a bit due to it been sat, would this happen and if so how much to get it fixed? thank people

Hi and welcome to SN.
The noise you're hearing is probably the age old rear strut knock that new age scoobs suffer from.
Search on here and you'll find plenty of posts about it.

You'll hear this at low speed, and can be temporarily quietened with some WD40 sprayed on the strut shaft.
I was told the same as you when I bought my scoob (in ignorance), but talk to a few experienced peeps and it will no doubt be sticking strut disease.
Easy way to check is stand with your back to a rear wheel arch and grip under the arch with your fingers. Lift gently and the car will lurch upwards instead of smooth movement. Repeat for other side.
The fix: new struts (temporary), or coil overs (less temporary depending on what you read).

If you're unsure I suggest you take it to a main stealer for a check over.
The WD40 thing is not a fix it will just quieten things down for a short while if they're not too worn.
If there is a problem with the handbrake it shouldn't affect the actual driving, but it might make it difficult to park reliably.
Either way if you don't feel capable of checking things out yourself it would be a good idea with an unknown car to get professional opinion.

You can do them yourself, a Subaru dealer will charge anything from about £220 each.
It's safe to drive if it's not too bad, but as I said you really ought to get somebody local to take a look before you venture too far or fast.
