Default HKS induction kit? rubbish?

Since ive had my hks super power flow kit on my 97 sti, ive not seen any improvement in performance to be honest. i think it is sucking in hot air, and im really not happy. i want to fit a heat shield (cant find one to fit it) around it and remove my resonator box, is there anything else i can do to improve the air flow??

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Yep, it'll be the hot air that's the issue... What you've gained in flowing more air, you've immediately negated by exposing it to the high underbonnet temps (hot air being less dense), therefore back to square one!

Thing is, even if you do manage to totally get it insulated from the hot air, you won't tangibly 'feel' any extra power - it'll all be a Placebo effect i.e. induction roar and 'knowing' it's fitted. I reckon on 5-7bhp tops, but more like 2-3bhp... if any!

Thing is mate, I seriously wouldn't run a cone/mushroom filter without a remap, as the extra airflow WILL alter the scaling of the MAF's airflow output voltage. This could 'fool' your ECU to think that less air is entering the engine than actually is, causing the ECU to underfuel, leading to a dangerously lean-running engine!

PM harvey... He supplies and fits pukka inner wing CAI kits and may be able to make it fit your particular filter. When he fits these, I think he uses a very large cone anyhow, so hopefully the kit will fit your filter anyway. If not, then flog your filter and get harvey to supply and fit everything from scratch! Whatever you do I suggest a remap...

Tests of the HKS kit show it doesn't filter very well anyway, so any extra power will be offset in a year or two by the power loss due to the extra wear on the bore and pistons!

K&N drop in panel filter, later large x-section intake with resonator removed and curently modifying the later ram air intake to fit!

Yep - I ran an HKS SPF kit - make a lovely noise but did nothing for performance, and having read up on them, removed and sold it.

Everyone says pretty much the same thing - unless you're going for 320bhp+ there isn't much point in changing the original air box - just whack a decent panel filter like Green or K&N in there.

Taking my induction kit off this weekend, switching back to OE airbox, K&N panel and Samco hoses, also gonna do a snorkleoptomy and and use a GP elbow into the wing. Never had the OE box on since i got it so should be interesting..To quote,
"In summary, the induction kit lost up to 20bhp/29.5lbft up to 3200rpm, but gained up to 10bhp/14.75lbft between 3200-4600rpm over the standard air box and K&N panel filter."
OE box Vs a cone set up as with the spec c project ala:

This should be on the front page - would save a lot of repeated posts.
